Dave Herring is a singer, songwriter and musician who writes honest songs that reflect his experiences, faith and views on life.  He recently joined together with the Eastbound String Machine after working on his debut project “Look to the East.” The band has been well received in their community.

Dave’s writing is thoughtful and uncliche. His music is a blend of bluegrass and folk. Lyrics in his songs are well thought out and reflect his creative songwriting talent. There are no forced rhymes or phrases often heard before.  The melodies in his songs are catchy and  listeners find themselves singing along to a song they’ve never heard before.

TN County Line Bluegrass features traditional bluegrass music played by some talented musicians from the Chattanooga area. Their infectious, toe-tapping tunes, played from the heart are guaranteed to liven up your day.

The band members include lead singer Matt Evans on guitar and bass. Slaten Dooley adds the melodic sound of the banjo in addition to vocals, dobro and guitar. Brittany Swafford plays the fiddle and sings. Cody Snow adds the distinctive sound of the mandolin and Steve Askew rounds out the band on vocals and bass.

When it seems everywhere you go, everyone is talking about the “good old days,” it’s a welcome sight to have someone like Ross Moore come along and give us the kind of music and entertainment that we all miss so much. His brand of music encompasses Appalachian, Celtic and Bluegrass. He plays fourteen different instruments, including Autoharp, Mountain Dulcimer, Hammered Dulcimer, Banjo, Mandolin, 12-String Guitar, Dobro, Celtic Harp, Irish Pennywhistle, Concertina, Bowed Psaltery, Piano, Harmonica, and Drums. Along with strong vocals and his brand of down home humor, Ross puts on a show that captures the imagination of young and old alike.
Ross has been in the entertainment business for over thirty years. In 1972 he composed and performed the musical score for the nationally televised series, From The Hills for PBS, with film star Martin Sheen. Additionally in 1974 he composed and performed the musical score for the Appalachian Arts Festival in Charleston, West Virginia for readings by Earl Hamner, creator of the television series “The Waltons”, and series star Richard Thomas, famous for his portrayal of the character ‘John Boy.’

Fried Green and Heirloom Tomato Salad with Balsamic Vinegar Reduction

1 cup all-purpose flour
3 eggs
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
4 large unripe tomatoes, cut into 1/2-inch thick slices, ends removed
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 – 3 heirloom varieties of tomatoes, sliced like the green tomatoes.
Balsamic Vinegar reduced to a thick syrup

In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt and pepper to taste

Make an egg wash with whipped eggs and water

Dip the tomatoes in the egg wash and then dredge them in the flour mixture, coating both sides well.

Place a large cast iron skillet over medium heat and coat with the oil. When the oil is hot, pan-fry the tomatoes (in batches if necessary) until golden brown and crispy on both sides, about 3 to 4 minutes on each side. Carefully remove the tomatoes and drain on paper towels.

Layer the fried green tomatoes and heirloom tomatoes shingle style and drizzle with the balsamic vinegar.

Yuengling and Honey Braised Chicken

2 -4 Chicken breasts halves (boneless/skinless is ok, but I prefer skin on)
1 Stick butter
salt and pepper
1 bottle of Yuengling Lager Beer
½ pound of honey

Pat chicken dry and season with salt and pepper. Heat butter in a 10-inch cast iron skillet over moderately high heat until foam subsides, then brown chicken on both sides, about 4 minutes total. Transfer to a plate.

Add beer to skillet and deglaze by boiling over high heat, stirring and scraping up brown bits, until reduced by about 1/2. Re-add chicken breasts and juices from plate, pour honey over chicken, then gently simmer over low heat, covered, until chicken is just cooked through, about 8 minutes.

Watching newcomer Darnell Levine perform is like an unanticipated warm day in the dead of winter; his unapologetic vocal delivery, honest lyrics, and melodious style bring reprieve to the sometimes stagnant air of the music scene. Being compared among jazz greats and neo-soul personalities is assumed, but he remains quietly neutral on the subject–letting the music itself moderate any sentiments of association.

Born Darnell Levine Anderson, the Louisville, Kentucky native was driven into music at an early age, literally. He fell in love with music while riding in cars to and from destinations. His morning rides to work with his father exposed him to the Bee Gees, Ray Charles, The Carpenters, and Bonnie Raitt. His afternoon ride in his mother’s ‘86 Toyota Camry exposed him to The Stylistics, Earth, Wind, & Fire, Sam Cooke, and Luther Vandross. Darnell credits these musical inspirations as his school outside of school. Though he started out shy, soon he began leading at church and local high school choirs. He is also a formally trained percussionist and self-taught pianist.

From a humble beginning having built his first drums using discarded packing boxes at the age of 12, Dr. Arvin Scott grew to become an award-wining, multi-instrumentalist, composer, motivational, youth program founder/director, and university professor with a track record that spans nearly 40 years. His specialties including African, Caribbean, Brazilian, Classic Jazz, Nu Jazz, and R&B are foundations for his eclectic “Nu Jazz World Beat” compositions.
Selected performance highlights include Umbria Italy at the Umbria Jazz Festival (representing Berklee college of Music); Bajia Brazil; the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, Inc. Atlanta Heroes Awards hosted by John Bon Jovi, Janet Jackson, Michael Bolton, Jimmy Jam & Terri Lewis & others that honored Human Rights Activist and Leader Mrs. Coretta Scott King; Multi-Grammy Award Winner, Usher; Ground-breaking Artist, The B-52’s; and Concert Promoter, Charlie Brusco; frequent performances (since 2000) with world-renowned “jam band” Widespread Panic, at sell-out concerts of up to 20,000 fans per show at the Phillips Arena in Atlanta, as well as Birmingham, New Orleans, and Athens.

Other selected highlights include featured performing artist/instructor at multi Grammy-Award winner, Roy aka “Futureman” Wooten’s (of Bela Fleck and the Fleck Tones) World Music Camp at Camp Garner, performances at two International Olympic events–1996 and in 2004. He has recording credits on Widespread Panic at the Classic Center CD. Dr. Scott has toured Rhode Island, Boston, New Hampshire, Main, with Grammy Award winner Mose Allison. He was jazz drummer for the late Alan Dawson on vibes and has performed with a host of trail-blazing, classic, R&B & pop artists such as Chuck Jackson, known for hit singles, “Any Day Now” (written by Burt Bacharach), “I don’t Want to Cry”, and “I keep Forgettin”, Rufus Thomas of Memphis known for his hit recording “Walking The Dog”, the late Mary Wells known for her hit “Two Lovers”. Dr Scott, along with Jonah Ellis–R&B hit producer/guitarist, songwriter & former musical director for The Temptations, performed as opening act for a concert headlined by the late James Brown in Knoxville Tennessee. He has also toured with Montana Skies in LA, Baltimore, North Carolina, Grorgia, Tennessee.

The results of the Ice Cream Social / Competition at the Chattanooga Market on 7/6 are in, and the 2008 Best Ice Cream vote went to Clumpies by a margin of a single vote!  The race was incredibly competitive, but the real winner is the Chambliss Shelter/Children’s Home, the event’s charitable beneficiary which received over $4,500 in contributions.

Our warmest regards go out to all the ice cream competitors which provided their delicious ice creams, staff, time and energy to make this event a huge success:  Clumpies, Brusters, Nana’s, Sweet Tooth, Cold Stone and Mayfields.
